A battle between popcorn and healthy food

Popcorn and juice served at the cinema are among the unhealthiest snacks, by number of calories and amount of saturated fat content, according to a study made in American cinemas by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and quoted by AFP.The average menus with popcorn and juice sold in the largest U.S. cinema chain, Regal, contain not less than 1610 calories, meaning more than three Big Mac hamburgers, and 60 grams of saturated fat, according to the study. This not taking into account the liquid butter which is added by the Americans on their popcorn adding 130 calories with each teaspoon, informs Mediafax.

The second U.S. cinema chain, AMC, has smaller menus, but a large portion of popcorn still has 1030 calories and 57 grams of saturated fat, the equivalent of 500 grams of pork ribs and a cup of ice cream. The ratio of saturated fat – which favors the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases- which can be found  in popcorn is determined by the oil used for their preparation, particularly coconut oil.

The juice sold in American movie theaters are also considered in the study. Thus, at the Regal, the smallest non-dietetic juice has 300 calories and the biggest, a liter and a half, has 500 calories – the equivalent of 33 teaspoons of sugar.Neither sweets are healthy, too. A pack of 225 grams of colored chocolate candies contains 1160 calories and 35 grams of saturated fat, the equivalent of 500 grams of steak with potatoes and butter, baked.

Now that you have seen how unhealthy these aliments are, we come with the alternative: a list of healthy and tasty food. Don’t forget that equilibrium is the key of health. Sleep and weight loss

Here’s an easy thing you can do to help yourself lose more weight: get enough sleep. A study recently published in the Annals of Internal Medicine shows the value of getting the proper amount of sleep each night in one’s ongoing battle against the bulge.Study participants who got 5 ½ hours of sleep or less each night lost less weight than those who were following the same diet and exercise plan and got 8 ½ hours of sleep each night. The study followed 10 dieters, each of whom consumed 10% less calories each day than they would normally eat.

All of the ten dieters lost an average of 6.6 pounds during the study. However, the dieters who had 8 ½ hours or more of sleep per night lost more fat than the dieters who got 5 ½ hours or less sleep each night. The sleepy dieters (as we’ll call the group who slept just 5 ½ hours or less each night) lost mostly nonfat body mass, including protein, muscle, and valuable tissue building blocks.

Why did this occur? Researchers theorized that the change in amount of fat lost by the two groups of dieters was due to the hormone ghrelin, which is produced in the gastrointestinal tract. Ghrelin works to stimulate hunger, slow our metabolism and help us to retain fat. Ghrelin levels are thought to be changed by sleep loss. For those who didn’t get enough sleep, more protein in the body was surmised to be converted into glucose to help the brain and body work more efficiently, making the levels of ghrelin in the body rise. This promotes hunger and fat retention.

Another  study in Chicago followed twelve normal weight men who were deprived of sleep for two days. During this time period, ghrrelin levels increased dramatically, as did their appetite and craving for carbohydrates and high-calorie foods.

    Paleo diet for vegetarians

Following a Paleo diet has been now proved to be a very healthy way of living. Known as the best diet option for today, it is a really tempting trend. But we all know that cavemen, who have given us the Paleo diet, lived on a lot of hunted meat and seafood. Living amongst wildlife, it was a major source of food for these people. So a very common question often arises. Can the Paleo diet be followed as a completely vegetarian diet? Is it a suitable option for vegetarians? The answer is a relieving YES! Paleo Diet for Vegetarians

Now let us understand the vegetarian Paleo diet. Just to brief you with the basics of a Paleo diet, it is a diet derived from the cavemen of the Paleolithic age, which existed more than 10000 years ago. It includes all fruits and nuts, vegetables, lean meat and seafood, which cavemen hunted fresh and ate seasonally. This provided them with lots of natural nutrients and flavors, making them healthy and strong from within.

So… let’s get back to the ‘vegetarian’ Paleo diet. Being on a vegetarian Paleo diet would basically mean understanding the diet and deriving the benefits provided by the vegetarian elements of it. But we also need to consider the nutrition we will be getting through the vegetarian content. Will it be sufficient? Will it complete the advantage that this diet is supposed to give out? High in protein supply, the vegetarian diet is very apt.

This write up will tell you about the ingredients of a vegetarian Paleo diet and their nutrition levels. Firstly, eggs form a very crucial part of a veg. Paleo diet. A rich source of protein, eggs should be consumed at least six times a week according Paleo experts. It is a very ideal starter for a fresh, energetic and a healthy day.

Eating only eggs is definitely not enough. Other food items in your diet list can include several vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, pumpkins, spinach (remember Popeye!), watercress, okra and the types. Surprising but true, vegetables around us have more protein than we assume. They are also rich sources of vitamins and oils. When eaten in right combinations and quantities, they have the ability to give a very balanced and healthy meal routine.

Not to forget nuts and fruits! These are completely a pleasure food, with great flavors and ripe with nutrition and energy boosters. Fruit juices are an option but natural fruits are a better alternative since they provide us with essential fibers that our body requires. All fruits that you would get in each season are a great intake. This is exactly what the cavemen did. However, nuts like cashews, almonds, walnuts, Brazil nuts, dry fruits are also high on calories and hence should be consumed in measured quantities.

5 REASONS NURSES WANT MANDATORY STAFFING RATIOS

When most people go into the hospital, they expect to receive quality medical care and leave a few days later on the path to a full recovery. Most of them don’t anticipate poor care, including everything from slow response times to medication errors.
According to some nurses, the fact that many hospitals are understaffed is actually putting patients in danger. Although healthcare facilities are reporting a nursing shortage, thanks to a lack of properly trained nurses or the funds to hire an adequate number of nurses, a growing number of nursing organizations are calling on the government to legislate minimum staffing ratios.
In 2004, California was the first state to enact such laws, and since then, 15 additional states and the District of Columbia have passed laws regarding minimum staffing levels in hospitals. But few have gone as far as to establish specific, mandatory ratios, citing the nursing shortage and the increased costs associated with such measures. Despite the objections, nurses all over the country in every specialty have been fighting for staffing ratios for several reasons.

    MORE NURSES MEAN BETTER OUTCOMES

When arguing for mandatory ratios, nurses point to statistical evidence showing that having more nurses on the floor decreases the likelihood of adverse events and improves the quality of patient care. A 2011 study sponsored by the AFL-CIO indicated that after the mandatory staffing ratios were passed, the likelihood of a patient death was significantly decreased, and the actual number of surgical deaths and deaths due to complications after hospitalization, such as pneumonia also decreased measurably. Nurses point to these findings as evidence that having an adequate number of nurses caring for each patient allows them time to completely care for each patient; they are also able to notice and address potential problems quickly.

    STAFFING RATIOS MEAN HAPPIER NURSES

Despite the vast majority of nurses reporting a great deal of satisfaction with their career choice, burnout is still a significant problem. When a single nurse is charged with caring for a number of gravely ill patients, the stakes are high, and many nurses work long hours with limited breaks or “down time.” Supporters of ratios argue that when hospital units are adequately staffed, nurses are able to confidently do their jobs and take the mental breaks that are necessary for excellent care. Nurses in states with mandatory ratios report greater satisfaction with their work; it’s not uncommon for nurses in these states to seek additional education as well, such as enrolling in an online RN to BSN program.

    SICKER PATIENTS NEED MORE CARE

Our population is aging, and the acuity of patients of all ages increases all the time. Diseases and conditions are more complex than ever, with many patients dealing with chronic conditions that require advanced care. Changing diseases and treatment protocols require advanced training and education or experienced nurses. While many healthcare facilities have shifted some responsibilities to technicians or other professionals, those lower-level providers cannot provide the same level of care as an experienced nurse. Nurses argue that with minimum ratios, experienced nurses will always be the ones providing the bulk of patient care.

MORE NURSES EQUAL LOWER HEALTHCARE COSTS

While nurses acknowledge that mandatory staffing ratios will marginally increase hospital staffing budgets, they also point out that adequate staffing will lower healthcare costs overall, primarily because adverse events such as pressure ulcers, patient falls, pneumonia and infections are less likely to happen when nurses aren’t spread too thin. For example, a study by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality found that pneumonia increases treatment costs by almost $30,000, while pressure ulcers cost nearly $8.5 million per year to treat — costs that could be significantly reduced by mandatory staffing ratios.

NURSING RATIOS WILL HELP END THE NURSING SHORTAGE

According to the National Nurses Organizing Committee, in the years since California’s law was enacted, the number of licensed RN’s in California has increased by more than 100,000, and applications to nursing school have also increased. They argue that the ratios make nursing a more attractive career option for new nurses, and that the ratios force hospitals to hire more nurses. With the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicting the need for more than a million new nurses in the next decade, anything that can be done to ease the shortage is important, supporters argue.
Not everyone is in favor of nursing ratios; many hospitals and healthcare systems claim that the laws increase healthcare costs and do not measurably improve patient outcomes. That is not stopping nurses though, who are working in states around the country to protect both their profession and their patients.

COFFEE LINKED TO LOWERING BREAST CANCER RECURRENCE

A recent study has revealed that coffee may play a part in reducing the likelihood of recurring breast cancer. The study of 634 patients which took place in Sweden, found that those being treated with the drug Tamoxifen who drank at least two cups of coffee per day, had a significantly decreased risk of re-developing breast cancer.
But this is not the first health study to make such a claim about coffee, and the drink has been said to have many health benefits in the past as well as numerous prospective risks.
    Benefits
    • The caffeine in coffee is said to boost your brain’s performance, including reaction times and memory.
    • Studies have shown that coffee can reduce a person’s risk of developing type-two diabetes.
    • Coffee is packed full of antioxidants, argued to have properties including anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy.
    • It can speed up our metabolism. The caffeine in coffee is said to increase your metabolism and therefore help has been linked to weight loss.
    • Coffee is thought to be linked with a reduction in the likelihood of developing other cancers such as skin and prostate.
    Risks
    • Heavy coffee drinking can cause sleeplessness due to the caffeine content.
    • High coffee consumption may be linked to an increase in blood pressure.
    • Certain types of coffee have been linked to high cholesterol.
    • Drinking too much coffee has been known to cause muscle tremors and increased heartbeat.
    • Evidence has been published to suggest that excessive caffeine consumption during pregnancy could be related to lower birth weights in babies.

DON’T FALL FOR FAD DIETS: JUST GO VEGAN

C’mon, admit it: You’ve tried at least one fad diet in your life. Hopefully, not one of these 10 weird diet crazes but probably something equally strange and ineffective.
It didn’t work, did it? At least not for very long. Don’t feel too bad. Everyone gets suckered sometimes. Those so-called “miracle” weight-loss plans can be as tempting as chocolate cake. The upbeat advertisements, slim spokespeople, “revolutionary breakthrough” technologies, and outlandish promises from so-called medical “experts” can be pretty hard to resist.
Even sensible people can start to think, “Well, maybe this diet is different.” But most trendy weight-loss schemes aren’t only too good to be true—they’re also unhealthy and even downright dangerous.Take the infamous Atkins diet. No one can eat high-fat and high-calorie foods, lose weight, and be healthy. But plenty of people fell for it—at least until it landed them in the doctor’s office.
    High-Protein, Low-Carbohydrate: A Deadly Combination
The Atkins craze lasted for quite a while compared to some fad diets. Newly formulated low-carb foods suddenly started hitting the market, and people began eating red meat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner—even as a snack. But although high-protein, low-carb diets may work for a short while, the pounds almost always come back with a vengeance—and bring serious health problems with them.James Anderson, M.D., a professor of medicine and clinical nutrition at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, said that the Atkins Diet is “absolutely the worst diet you could imagine for long-term obesity, heart disease, and some forms of cancer. If you wanted to find one diet to ruin your health, you couldn’t find one worse than Atkins.”
There are similarly detrimental diets, though. The Zone diet, for example, features mostly fatty animal-based foods. High-protein, low-carb diets can cause the body to go into a state of ketosis—meaning that your body basically shuts down. (If you’re picturing a zombie movie—well, you should probably watch a little less TV. But ketosis isn’t a very lively state to be in, either. In fact, it can be deadly.)
According to the American Heart Association, “[h]igh-protein animal foods are usually also high in saturated fat. Eating large amounts of high-fat foods for a sustained period raises the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke and several types of cancer. People who can’t use excess protein effectively may be at higher risk of kidney and liver disorders, and osteoporosis.”
    Crazy Diet Crazes
Beware of any diet that makes bizarre, hard-to-believe, or largely unsubstantiated claims. The blood-type diet, made popular by Eat Right for Your Type by Peter J. D’Adamo, N.D., falls into all three categories. It has been criticized by scientists and health professionals alike. The theory—that people should choose a diet based on their blood type—has no scientific basis, and D’Adamo’s “advice” can cause more harm than good.
In the essay “Blood Type Diet: Fact or Fiction?,” Michael Klaper, M.D., writes that “despite widespread knowledge that many non-Caucasians are intolerant of dairy products … [the book] recommends that ‘Type B’s of Asian descent may need to incorporate them (dairy products) more slowly into their diets as they adjust their systems to them.’ … I fear that the consequences for many … lactase-deficient readers … will be severe bouts of abdominal cramps and diarrhea.”In other words, if you’re not Caucasian—and even if you are—you may be lactose intolerant, and eating dairy products, as D’Adamo suggests, might make you sick to your stomach. But, hey, anything to drop a few pounds, right?
    I didn’t think so.
When it comes to unhealthy, dairy-laden diets, Slim-Fast takes the cake. PETA evaluated a few popular weight-loss plans and couldn’t even come up with one positive thing to say about Slim-Fast. In fact, PETA urges people to eat plant-based foods rather than meat, eggs, or dairy products. You might think that PETA, as an organization that advocates a vegan diet, would approve of the grapefruit diet or the cabbage-soup diet, but some versions of these diets allow people to eat meat. If you’ve learned anything from what you’ve read so far, you should know that meat is not a healthy part of any diet.

    Low blood pressure (Hypotension)

Low blood pressure, also called hypotension, is blood pressure low enough that the flow of blood to the organs of the body is inadequate and symptoms and/or signs of low blood flow develop shock.Low pressure alone, without symptoms or signs, usually is not unhealthy. The symptoms of low blood pressure include lightheadedness, dizziness, and fainting.

    What are Carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are one of the main types of nutrients. They are the most important source of energy for your body. Your digestive system changes carbohydrates into glucose (blood sugar). Your body uses this sugar for energy for your cells, tissues and organs. It stores any extra sugar in your liver and muscles for when it is needed.Carbohydrates are called simple or complex, depending on their chemical structure. Simple carbohydrates include sugars found naturally in foods such as fruits, vegetables, milk, and milk products.
