AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE: THE MONSTER HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT

Your body is made of billions of cells, and each one of those cells has a tag, or marker, that identifies it as part of you. Your immune system protects your body by seeking out and destroying any cells that don’t have the “you” marker. These cells could include:
    • Viruses;
    • Bacteria;
    • Pollen;
    • Dust; and,
    • Cells from other organisms, like blood, skin grafts, or organ transplants.
Your immune system will also destroy your own cells if they mutate and the “you” marker is corrupt, which means your immune system plays a vital role in preventing cancers from forming.
However, because your immune system has the ability to attack your own sick and mutilated cells, it can sometimes become overzealous and attack healthy, non-mutated cells. This phenomenon is called autoimmunity, and it can lead to a host of diseases and disorders.
    Autoimmune Diseases
There are more than 80 known types of autoimmune diseases, and some resources put the number at well over 100. Because your immune system can affect any cell in your body, autoimmunity can also affect any cell, resulting in diseases and disorders in every part of your body.
Some autoimmune diseases, like type I diabetes, are highly common and well known; others are quite rare. One thing that all of these diseases have in common is that they tend to occur an average of three times more frequently in women than in men; and in some cases the ration of women to men is as high as 10:1.
    Diagnosing and Treating Autoimmune Diseases
Autoimmunity is often difficult to diagnose and treat because the symptoms can mimic so many other diseases. Also, there is not one branch of medicine that specializes in autoimmunity.
If a patient presents with vision impairment and headache, her doctor might believe that she has some kind of neurological disorder, like a pituitary tumor. However, there is also an autoimmune disease, called autoimmune hypophysitis, that has the exact same symptoms as a pituitary tumor and it’s sometimes difficult to differentiate between a pituitary tumor, and pituitary swelling on a brain scan.
Treating it like a pituitary tumor might relieve her symptoms, but it won’t correct the underlying autoimmunity, which means the antibodies could attack the pituitary again. Based on her scans the patient’s doctor could refer her to a group like the Skull Base Institute, which specializes in the treatment of pituitary tumors.
However, because there is no actually autoimmune specialty, or autoimmune specialist to treat the patient, the pituitary specialist could be the only option for any kind of treatment. Even in cases where the autoimmune disease is fairly common, patients still run into the same issue. The autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is the most common type of hypothyroidism in the United States. It affects approximately ten times as many women than men, and patients often exhibit the symptoms of hypothyroidism, even when their thyroid test results usually come back normal.
As a result, patients get diagnosed with, and treated for, a variety of other illnesses and it takes patients an average of four and a half years, and as many as five different doctors to finally get a diagnosis. Even when they get a diagnosis, the treatment doesn’t address the underlying autoimmunity, but it’s the only treatment option available.
    Protecting Yourself
Autoimmunity affects several different organ systems, and many of the symptoms vary depending on what’s affected. However, because it involves the immune system, there are some symptoms that almost all women with autoimmunitytend to experience. Familiarizing yourself with those symptoms can help you determine if you should talk to your doctor. If you have any of the common autoimmune symptoms and other symptoms, you should enter the symptoms into an online symptom checker to see if they match up to any known autoimmune diseases.
You should also pay close attention to your family medical history. Autoimmunity tends to run in families. If a close relative had an autoimmune disease, such as lupus, then you are more likely to develop one yourself.
Once you have gathered all of your information, you should approach your doctor with your findings. If the autoimmune disease has an antibody test, you should request that the doctor run that test. Don’t just rely on standard medical testing because they may not detect the problem.
Finally, familiarize yourself with the current treatment protocols for your illness, as well as any alternatives. Because there is no treatment specifically for the autoimmunity, both you and your doctor will be learning how to treat your illness.

BEING BEAUTIFUL AT WHAT COST ?

Today’s society has set the wrong standards for what is beautiful, and what our image should be. People are turning to the alternative of having surgery instead of diet and exercise. Can someone achieve a sixpack with abdominal liposuction? I’m sure many recipients will get the results that they want to achieve but it can also be done with the same regiment of diet and exercise.
The costs involved in cosmetic surgery can vary depending on what procedure you would like to have done. Liposuction prices can vary from $1500.00 to $7000.00. The cost will depend on what area of your body you would like to have the surgery performed. Some areas of the body actually require more than one treatment to achieve the final result. It is important that you don’t just choose your doctor based on cost alone. Do your research and make sure everything is explained to you such as costs, techniques and prices.
My theory is that $1500.00 to $7000.00 that you are going to spend on unnecessary surgery could be used to pay for a great dietitian and a personal trainer at the gym. The results will obviously take longer but in the long run it is the more suitable choice for obvious reasons. Are people so superficial that they are willing to risk their lives by going under the knife? Today’s society seems to want instant gratification and they are not willing to physically work for the result that they want to attain.
Do people still believe in inner beauty? If people would realize that inner beauty really does shine through on the outside we would have a much happier society. When did it all become about being perfect on the outside? People want the best of everything. The best car, the best house, the best dressed kids, and of course the best looking body.
We all need to start focusing on our inner beauty and not be so superficial about all the outside influences. What really does matter to you? Being happy on the inside or having that absolutely beautiful buff body that was achieved through liposuction surgery? It all needs to start from within.

    ASIAN BEAUTY GUIDELINES

Makeup tips are everywhere. But the thing people are forgetting is makeup tips that you can use greatly depends on how you look like. Your race alone is a huge factor on what type of makeup you use and how you use it. Always remember to use makeup tips that can apply to you. For instance, make up tips for Caucasian models may not work well if you have a dark tone or if you have narrow Asian eyes. Similarly, Asian makeup tips may not work well for European-looking women because Asian eyelids are very different because most have no crease on the upper lid. That being said, here are makeup tips specifically made for Asian women.

    EYES

The eyes of Asians are naturally beautiful because of their almond shape. Putting the right makeup to it will make it even more stunning which makes black mascara and black eyeliner are the Asian woman’s best friend. When it comes to eye shadows, you must take into account the amount of fold you have above the eyelid.
    • For the Hooded Eye: The goal is to open them up for a brighter overall affect. To craft a wider eye and still retain the gorgeous shape, use a slight contouring influence. Start with an overall application of a light shadow, from the lid to the brow. Then, use a dark, medium color eye shadow on the hood of the eye, casing up the part of the lid that you want to recede. Then blend the darker shadow with the lighter color for a more natural recession.
    • For Wide Eyes: Any mishmash of shadows and liners can be used with this eye; the only thing you’ll need to settle on is if you want to make the eye look smaller or wider. For smaller eyes, use a liner to line the bottom of the eye, taking care to line as close as possible to the lash line. If you want to make the eyes look wider, line the top lash as usual and add a sparkly shade to the inner corners of the eye (the part of the eye that is closest to the nose).

    EYEBROWS

Black eyebrow pencil may look too heavy on some Asian women. An alternative to this is to pick for colors lighter than your natural hair color like mahogany or dark brown. You could also try using eyebrow mascara on your eyebrows to make it look more stunning.
If you want to create a beautiful arch, take a long eye pencil and hold it diagonally so that one part of the pencil is across the tip of your nose, and the other end is at the outer edge of your pupil; this is where your natural arch falls. From there, begin to create an arch.

    LASHES

Asian lashes should be curled as they are typically straight. Curling the lashes should always be the first step before applying mascara. Afresh, for a wider eye, curling will instantly create this affect. Then, when you do apply mascara, use a light hand. The goal is to accentuate your eyes, but not over power.

    LIPS

Lips are the gem of an Asian beauty. They are nearly always naturally full and gorgeous. This is your chance to zing up your look and have fun. An Asian beauty can leave the house with only her red lipstick on for a simple elegant look.
Augment the lips with this technique. Apply the lipstick shade of your choice. Then, using a lip gloss in the color or flavor of your choice, apply to the center of the lower lip only. This will generate the illusion of luscious, full lips.

    BLUSH

With the even complexion of most Asian beauties, a little blush can go a long way. As the face shape of most Asians is round or square, oranges, peaches, corals and soft pinks are great blush colors.  A touch of blush at the top of the cheeks will brighten up the perfect canvas, add pop, and create cheekbones that will be the envy of everyone.

Enhancing the natural beauty of your Asian features is a paramount tip. With your natural beautiful Asian looks, great skin products can help you look even more stunning. Don’t forget to start off with the perfect match foundation make up that is a must-have for every woman. Don’t get the foundations with pink tones as it makes a mask effect on the Asian skin. Look for yellow or olive undertone for those with pale light to dark skin.  Afterwards, build up the best features like the eyes for an overall beguiling appearance. And lastly, do not forget to work on your personality development to make you beautiful inside and out.

BEAUTY AND VEGGIES TWO WORLDS THAT CROSS

Since the beginning of recorded history, human beings have always tried to find ways to improve their health and be more attractive. Our knowledge of the importance vegetables and fruits have as nutrients has increased with time, and we now realize without a doubt that our food plays an essential role in being healthy. Recent studies have proven that even beauty can greatly be enhanced by eating proper food. In addition, many oils that are derived from fruit and vegetables are in reality very useful beauty aids when applied directly to the skin.
Perhaps the most widely known use of a vegetable to enhance beauty is the use of cucumber slices on the eyes. This is not just a trend or method of relaxation, but is a process that has been around for ages, which soothes and helps the skin around the eyes.  The cucumber, When the cucumber is applied on the eye (generally for 15 – 30 minutes) it will hydrate the skin, alleviate puffiness, tighten the skin and leave it more radiant. Cucumbers which are fresh and stored in the fridge for coolness will produce the best outcome. The use of this simple tip, less expensive than commercial eye creams, has the added advantage of drawing its benefits from pure ingredients that nature offers as a free gift.
Raw potatoes are another aliment that can be used for beauty purposes. Putting small slices of potatoes under the eyes for around 20 minutes will dramatically diminish unwanted dark circles.  The reason behind this positive result is the enzyme contained in the vegetable called catecholase.
Applying some vegetable oils on the body, during massages for instance, improves the natural skin barrier and can help those with various skin problems because of their natural antibacterial properties. Some oils are rich in linoleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and fatty acid which are all important elements for maintaining healthy and stunning skin. There are many oils known to aid in making beautiful skin such as sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil and even olive oil.
The common, yet delicious, tomato is a fruit that provides silica, which assists in preserving the elasticity of the skin, healthy nails and glossy hair. Soya provides zinc which is needed to produce smooth skin.  Known vitamins that ensure long term beauty are Magnesium, vitamin C, Beta Carotene, Sulfur and Vitamin E which are all found in fruits and vegetables. Foodstuff with an abundant supply of these vitamins are Cabbage, Broccoli, Garlic, Oranges, Pumpkin (as well as Pumpkin seeds), Olives, Avocados, Kiwi, Almonds and other nuts.

If you desire to gain or maintain a beautiful body, you will need vegetables and fruit daily. This has become an unavoidable fact because beauty does come from the inside — it’s undeniable that the proper functioning of all that is inside the body has an effect on one’s beauty. Vegetables and fruit contribute indisputably to healthy bodies and their oils can be extremely beneficial when applied to the skin, which makes them a helpful and needed friend in staying beautiful. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.”

HOW DRUGS MAKE IT TO MARKET

Prescription drugs have been a godsend for millions of people.
    • Before insulin, diabetics would die, either from the direct effects of the disease or from complications like kidney damage and gangrene.
    • Before penicillin and other antibiotics, people would die from minor bacterial infections or from the debilitating effects of syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases.
    • Before chemotherapy and similar drugs, the chance of survival for most forms of cancer was zero.
However, despite all of the good that prescription drugs have done, there are still instances where they have done as much harm as good.
How Drugs Make it to Market
Drug companies have to go through several phases before they can bring a drug to market – a process that can often take 12 years, or longer.
    • In the first part of the process the drug company researches the possible uses of certain compounds for specific diseases. This process can take up to six years, depending on the compound and the disease they are trying to treat.
    • In the second step of the process the drug company submits an Investigational New Drug Application to the FDA and conduct at least three phase of clinical testing.
      The first phase tests the overall safety of the new drug;
      The second phase tests safety and efficacy of specific doses of the drug;
The third phase tests the safety and efficacy and evaluates the side effects.
The clinical process can take up to six years, depending on the compound and the drug and the disease it I intended to treat.
    • In the third step, the drug company submits a New Drug Application to the FDA, along with all of the reports from their pre-clinical and clinical testing, requesting approval to put the drug on the market. The FDA will then review all of the information, which could take as long as two years.
Once the drug reaches the market, the FDA also does surveillance on the drug to determine if it remains safe and effective once it is released to the public. The post-market surveillance period could last up to 14 years.
    How Drugs Become Dangerous
Considering how long it takes, and how much testing is required, to bring a drug to market, it seems odd that any drugs would turn out to be dangerous. However, while the FDA approval process is quite involved, there are some work-arounds.
For example, if a new drug is based off another drug that was previously approved by the FDA, the pre-clinical and clinical testing phases could be significantly shorter than they would be for a completely new drug.
For example, the drug Levaquin is part of a family of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones — other antibiotics in this family include Avelox and Cipro. Levaquin is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections from bronchitis to anthrax. Levaquin is actually a second phase drug, meaning a first phase of antibiotics had already been made from fluoroquinolones and approved by the FDA. As a result, Levaquin might not have undergone as much testing as the first phase, because the two phases of drugs were so similar. Unfortunately, it was later discovered that patients were experiencing peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage) and tendon ruptures from using Levaquin. It resulted in many patients starting a Levaquin lawsuit because of the damage caused by the drug.
Fen-Pen is another example. Fen-Phen was a diet drug that was the focus of a lawsuit in the 1990s. It was a combination for two drugs that already existed on the market — fenfluramine and phentermine. Fen-Phen underwent some clinical testing, but because it was based on drugs that had already been approved, there might not been as much testing as if it were brand new. It wasn’t until the drug hit the market that people realized that the drug caused heart valve damage in 30 percent of patients.
Rushing through the testing process is not the only way drugs make it to market. There are also those manufacturers who simply bypass the FDA altogether and send their drugs straight to market. Not only are these drugs making it onto the shelves in drug stores, they are also making into the drug registries that doctors use to write prescriptions. The FDA estimates that approximately two percent of drugs fall into this category.
As a patient, you can protect yourself by reading the information that comes with your drug to keep yourself informed about the possible side effects and drug interactions. Pharmacists are often more up-to-date on medications, as well as possible side effects and complications, than your doctor, so if you have any concerns consult with your pharmacist first.

CAR ACCIDENTS DURING PREGNANCY: RISKS AND PREVENTION

Pregnancy is one of the most exciting times in a woman’s life; and, for most expectant moms, those nine months are a time for planning, dreaming and enjoying the experience of bringing life into the world. However, along with the excitement of impending motherhood comes a fair amount of anxiety concerning the health and well-being of both mother and child. Indeed, it’s extremely common for expectant moms to worry about every little thing, including issues and complications that are unforeseeable or unpreventable.
Take car accidents, for example. Always cause for concern, crashes and fender benders are especially worrisome during pregnancy. Keep reading for more on car accidents during pregnancy, including tips on how to protect yourself, which questions to ask your doctor, and more.
Car Accidents During Pregnancy: The Risks
Aside from the risks associated with serious accidents, even the mildest fender benders can be dangerous during pregnancy. What’s more, a number of factors contribute to the risks of these types of accidents, some of which include the following:
    • How far along you are in your pregnancy.
    • Whether or not you were wearing  seat belt.
    • Whether or not there was a sudden, jarring impact.
    • Whether or not the airbags deployed.
    • Whether or not you experienced any injuries to the abdomen.
    • Whether or not you were injured anywhere else on your body.
For women in the early stages of pregnancy, a minor accident with no obvious injuries does not pose significant risks. Amniotic fluid provides a fair amount of cushioning, which will likely protect the baby from harm. However, in some cases, a sudden impact may increase the risks of placental abruption, which is characterized by the placenta separating from the uterus. As a result of placental abruption, the risk of hemorrhage, miscarriage, premature delivery and other complications is increased.
What to Do in Case of an Accident
If you are involved in an accident during pregnancy, seek immediate medical attention, even if no injuries are apparent. In the emergency room, a doctor will perform a general exam, and will likely order a full obstetric exam and an ultrasound. When you’re all clear to go home, you’ll be asked to monitor factors like fetal movement, as well as watch out for bleeding, contractions and other complications.
Since accidents are often the fault of another driver, speaking with a lawyer can help protect expectant moms when it comes to medical bills, lost wages and other factors. And, according to the San Diego-based legal experts at seriousaccidents.com, a personal injury attorney can help accident victims recover damages from insurance companies, as well.
Further, factors like seat belts and airbags can affect the risks of an accident during pregnancy. Seat belts, which many pregnancy women feel uncomfortable wearing, are absolutely crucial in preventing fetal damage during an accident; airbags, on the other hand, have been associated with an increased risk of miscarriage and preterm delivery. So, if you are involved in an accident during your pregnancy, be sure to give your doctor information regarding airbags and other safety features.
In instances of broken bones, head injuries and any injuries that don’t involve the abdomen, pregnant women should always inform healthcare workers of their pregnancies prior to receiving any treatment, or taking any medications.
    Reducing Your Risks
Although some accidents cannot be avoided, there are ways expectant moms can protect themselves and their babies. First of all, it’s important to understand that pregnancy symptoms like fatigue, light-headedness, drowsiness and back pain may contribute to hazardous circumstances when driving. Plus, due to an expanding belly, women might experience difficulties making split-second maneuvers when operating an automobile. Because of all these risks, pregnancy women should perform a day-to-day assessment of their well-being before getting behind the wheel, and opt for carpooling or public transportation if any potentially-harmful symptoms are present.
Although an accident during pregnancy is cause for alarm, the information provided here can help, both before and after the fact. Good luck, and drive safely

WANT WHITER TEETH? AVOID THESE FOODS AND BEVERAGES

We all want a bright, white, dazzling smile. From soaring confidence to a more youthful appearance, a great smile can do wonders for our image. However, achieving and maintaining a sparkling grin isn’t always easy. Take the foods we eat, for example. Certain foods and beverages can stain and discolor the teeth, as well as cause cavities and lead to poor dental health, in general.
If you’re interested in keeping your teeth healthy and white, keep reading for a list of foods and beverages to avoid.

    Coffee
There’s nothing like a great cup of coffee. Whether you like hot or iced, black or creamy, coffee perks us up and keeps us going, all day long. But when it comes to your smile, that morning (or afternoon) cup of joe comes at a price. When you drink coffee, the porous outer layer of your teeth absorbs the java’s dark color, leaving you with a less-than-stellar smile. Thankfully, though, you don’t have to give up caffeine, altogether. Avoid discoloration by sipping your coffee through a straw, or switch to healthier alternatives like green tea or maca.
    Red wine
Red wine is known for its bold flavor and its various benefits to health and wellness. However, like coffee, the rich color of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet and other red wines can be absorbed by your pearly whites, leaving them stained and unsightly. White or blush wines will give you your wine fix without the staining, but if you simply can’t give up your reds, cut discoloration by swishing with water between glasses.
    Cola
Cola, root beer and other dark sodas can do a number on your smile. In addition to the staining effects of dark beverages, soda’s acidity can wear down the enamel on your teeth, which, once lost, is gone forever. Plus, sodas with high sugar content can cause cavities and tooth decay. Since we all know soda can increase the risks of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and other complications, it’s time to ditch this bad habit, pronto, and repair the damage with professional teeth whitening treatments.
    Dark Fruit Juice
Grape, cherry and cranberry juices may be packed with vitamins and antioxidants, but the acids and concentrated colors can yellow the teeth and dull the smile. Sip through a straw, opt for lighter fruit juices like apple or white grape, or simply trade in your beloved juices for fresh, whole fruit. With fresh fruit, you get all the advantages of juice, without the sugar, acids and discoloration.
    Dark Sauces
If you’ve ever spilled soy sauce on your clothes or carpeting, you know it can leave tricky, difficult-to-treat stains. Unfortunately, soy sauce, tomato sauce, balsamic vinegar and other dark sauces do the same to our teeth. Avoid staining by using darker sauces sparingly, or cut them out, altogether. And since many sauces are high in calories, sugar, sodium and other unhealthy ingredients, cutting back will provide more benefits than whiter teeth.
    Chocolate
Sorry, ladies, but chocolate can have quite the impact on dental health. From staining and discoloration to cavities and tooth decay, this sweet treat can leave you with a less-than-desirable smile, and can even affect physical health. Avoid these effects by foregoing chocolate for tasty snacks like fresh fruit or nuts; and, for those days when you just can’t say no, be sure to rinse or brush thoroughly after eating chocolate.
A brighter, whiter smile isn’t impossible to achieve or maintain. With the tips provided here, you can keep your whites pearly, and enjoy all the benefits of a dazzling smile!
